Even though we are in the “social media” age with web 2.0 and all, email is the original social media and is a platform that has weathered the technology storm. One person can keep in touch with many people using email. This is great for a business because it is a means to communicate to many potential customers. But there is an art to using emails to market to your growing list of subscribers. You have to delicately introduce products to your list of subscribers. Here are my suggestions to implement while creating an email marketing campaign! I hope these help!

In my opinion it is better to build a relationship with your subscribers and offer them valuable content first; instead of trying to sell to them immediately. Although building a relationship with your subscribers can be time consuming, the rewards outweigh the effort. To adequately market using email you need to have email auto responders to support your relationship building. There is a fine line between a personal touch and a call to buy. My suggestion is fall somewhere in the middle. Small touches like manually, you know when you actually write the email lol, sending an email to thank your new subscribers and subscribers who have been on your list for reading. This small gesture reassures your subscribers that you are human and not an advertising machine.

Your goal should be to provide your readers with good content so that you gain their trust and they value your word. Thus, when you do offer a product they will be more prone to purchase because you have provided them with so much free content that they trust the product you are offering will benefit them greatly. Your readers can tell when you are trying to make a quick sale. Your goal should be to make them feel as though you have their best interest at heart. One of my favorite quotes is “people don’t care about what you know, they want to know that you care.” So if you want to increase your click through rate make sure you are providing value. You should be thinking about them when you’r writing. Some things you can ask yourself are “what are they doing in your emails and on your website”; keep in mind what they were searching for when they opted in your list. Relevancy is a very important factor.

Another overlooked tip is the “Welcome” email, which is designed to remind people that they signed up in the first place. The welcome email is also a good place to point out extra benefits and features that the subscriber may not have known about when joining your list. Also provide other ways for your subscribers to connect with you; via facebook, twitter, etc. You should also have useful links to other sites such as your blog or website. Your welcome email should peak their interest and have your readers pleasantly waiting to receive your emails to follow!

Here are some common mistakes that marketers make when using auto responders:
Providing a link that either does not work or links to a place you did not intend: This tiny mistake can cause readers to unsubscribe from your list or ignore future links because they had a bad experience with a link before. I know that sounds silly, but that is how finicky readers can be.
Spamming: This is useless because the person didn’t ask for the email and were not expecting it. So the chances that they read it are pretty slim. Spam is anything a reader doesn’t want in their inbox.
