Lonelygirl15 The Hoax – Home Schooled Entertainment or Viral Marketing?

Do you remember where you were when Lonelygirl15 was exposed as a hoax? Perhaps the revelation was not quite worthy of its importance, but the fact is that millions of people not only question but, more important, see, for months. This was one of the most successful attempts at viral marketing history, and if so, what is sold? First, a little back ground for those who have not been connected to the Internet or exposed to the media in recent weeks.

Social networking digital video
The online exhibition is a success social. Sites like MySpace (56 million members) and FaceBook (9 million members) have proven enormously popular websites in participating in the registration fee you can not post personal profiles, daily blogs and photos and produce lists of cyber friends, along with cyber-groups that "chill". YouTube is the version Video of the phenomenon of virtual socialization. Members can upload home videos (60,000 daily) and the use of moving images to convey their people and his artistic talents (100 million page views per day).

YouTube members develop their own "channels" to load video channels, and those with talent to find a large number of subscribers enlisted to follow its channel postings. YouTube has been a particularly successful vehicle for development of new bands of fans and bands to establish the marketing of their performances and recordings. Some companies use YouTube in the same way as the distribution sought MTV a decade ago. Others claim because the videos of its artists are being published without permission.

But YouTube is still primarily a playground for young people and ridicule – not necessarily strengthen the "youth" classification much. And like all meeting places for young people, is going to be a bunch of hormonally challenged men in the search for eye candy. Young, attractive women as video records followers gather substantial in a relatively short time.

Type "Bree"
So it was with "Lonelygirl15" in the title of the screen for a year sixteen years, the self-described "home schooling" teenager named "Bree" with a pretty face, big eyes and an all-button-in the place of personality adolescent female. During the summer, sent videos twenty-nine built a huge audience with nothing but the innocent charm and wit of the typical teenage girl: hormones with feet. Oh, and, as it turned out, a pair of professional writers.

Most of the videos were made in bedroom, although he did go on an outing or two with a friend. She made some suggestions in hidden and mysterious dark matter, which increased interest in his testosterone-fans soaked.

There was something of a history built in the chain of videos, but nothing to keep the interest up to a public art cinema. She was invited to a party, defied her father and went anyway, was punished for it. Quality, but there was not enough intrigue and popularity (and suspiciously high to the videos) to result in large amount of text messages about who might be this girl. There were also amateur videos posted on its identity, its mystery and caricatures of his person.

So it was that attracted some computer savvy detectives "Bree" an e-mail site MySpace had some tracking software attached. The reply sent Bree was located in one of the largest talent agencies in Los Angeles, Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Busted. The crew had requested The Email sending a message of their discovery and the origin of the response of Bree, the conclusion that the antics of all was a kind of marketing device related to Hollywood and its main products. Bree joined a fraternity reasonably exclusive "celebrities" that were "famous for being famous."

A true virus epidemic
The two guys who had been scripting and making the videos were "filmmakers" named Michael Ramesh Flinders and Beckett. Since its release, have not lost a step. The actress who played Bree is a young Los Angeleno named Jessica Rose, who has since appeared in the conversation national shows to discuss the months of scam always an artistic adventure. She found the casting on Craigslist for the role, again for two more tests, and got the job. Some of the scripts were written, but was given the freedom to improvise.

The filmmakers say that they Bree never intended to represent a person real – a little hard to believe, in the absence of disclaimers or asterisks in the images. Nor, they say, was a promotional device for any Hollywood studio or organization. However, they are currently represented by CAA, who were in that office, responding to emails under his nom-du-Tube and Mrs. Rose was paid $ 30,000 for her portrayal of Lonely Girl. Somebody invested in this adventure for a reason.

All parts exposed to declare without any hint of remorse that the show will continue. Jessica Rose sees the future of permanent positions that develop a story. Presumably, the filmmakers see it as an entry for larger screens. And if Lonelygirl15 remains a current fixture on YouTube, it will be an entire school of video art dedicated to the responses of the camera, comments, caricatures and other spins in the original YouTube hoaxette.

All this raises the question: should we care? If so, how? "About Why? There are thousands of videos on YouTube that are works of fiction, comedy, humorous, entertainment enthusiasts of all kinds. Why not a series? That was a parody, it seems to have offended someone, after all, YouTube is a platform for any type of video expression dispensed in small bites.

What I intended to accomplish may be an issue worthy of concern, if there was a way to track the money. If it was made for purpose of self – by the filmmakers, which was very successful in one of the most massive examples of viral marketing in our time. The problem is that they have been recognized for the production of images nobody would buy a ticket to go see. The fact that they made a cultural phenomenon in a matter of weeks is probably closer to the import of this trick.

The term "viral marketing" has become high on the list of Internet capabilities in high-tech advertising and marketing shops. Like most things that move with the speed of the 'net, no one has noticed very well how to seize it. Whatever the outcome Lonelygirl15 production is that under the right circumstances, you can create instant recognition for a virtual entity among a huge number of people. But Howard Dean did in 2004 – with a purpose. Furthermore, MySpace and YouTube branded themselves through word-of-net in the course of two or three years and now a billion dollar units.

What is interesting is that anyone, including Rupert Murdoch, is quite sure why they are the property of millions of dollars. Ad Success is measured in terms of exposure to the eyes, and these sites have eyes for the tens of millions. But nobody knows how to turn that fact into cash sponsorship. It is possible Lonelygirl15 that will blow some ad genius an idea of how to make money with viral marketing video. If so, you can look at Bree as an evolutionary step in the process.
